The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has authorized $1.2 million for the Port of Los Angeles to sponsor maritime-related educational programs in Southern California high schools to promote international trade and career opportunities.
The agreement with International Trade Education Programs, Inc. (ITEP) will allow hundreds of students in the Harbor Area and elsewhere to continue to receive classroom knowledge and field exposure to port and maritime business operations, as well as job opportunities connected to the nation’s largest trade gateway.
ITEP friends and family are invited to attend the 2010 Maritime Industry Salute dinner and fundraiser honoring ITEP founder Carol Rowen. The event benefiting the International Seafarers Center (ISC) of Long Beach-Los Angeles is being held aboard the RMS Queen Mary, on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010.

Chair Caroline Brown, International Trade Education Programs, Inc. (ITEP) announced today (Wednesday) that the a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization has chosen Amy L. Grat as the new CEO, replacing Carol Rowen, founder, who retired last month after more than a decade of award-winning community and business service and will remain a consultant at ITEP.
“Amy is a globally-focused non-profit professional with more than 15 years of experience raising funds, managing programs and effectively building relationships,” said Caroline Brown, chair, ITEP. “After an extensive search we felt that Amy skills and professional networks will enable the organization to build upon our first decade of success.”

The students and staff from the ITEP Earth Alert Academy at San Pedro High School, celebrated the 40th anniversary of Earth Day 2010 in April, with major on and off-campus events that generated interest and awareness for the “Green Generation.”

More than 120 high school students and school staff from three schools descended on the US Coast Guard Base on Terminal Island in San Pedro on April 14th - for an event that would leave a lasting impression.
Students from ITEP’s Earth Alert Academy in San Pedro, Global Environmental Science Academy from Wilmington, and Mojave XP Logistics Academy in Barstow were excited to have an up-close tour of the base, and discover Coast Guard opportunities.
Banning High School students from the International Trade Academy (ITA) and the Global Safety and Security Academy (GSS) attended the “High School Leadership Conference” (HSLC) sponsored by USC.
Different from the traditional keynote address with breakout panel discussions, the HSLC is a working conference -- based on case teaching -- with USC professors and students facilitating negotiation sessions.
The conference consists of role-play simulation where high school teams represent the different international actors involved in a serious regional conflict or critical global issue. Students are engaged in decision-making challenges currently faced by world leaders.
Mojave Xpress Academy at Barstow High sponsored their First Annual Career Fair on February 25, 2010. With more than 30 booths from local businesses and industry, students were able to talk to professionals who were “doing the job,” and ask questions about future opportunities and career options.
Students were scheduled to visit the Career Fair during all class periods from 8:30am-3:00pm, so that all of the 1,500 members of the student body had an opportunity to participate.
