Mojave XP Career Fair Brings Hope and Opportunity Print E-mail
barstowcf1.jpgMojave Xpress Academy at Barstow High sponsored their First Annual Career Fair on February 25, 2010. With more than 30 booths from local businesses and industry, students were able to talk to professionals who were “doing the job,” and ask questions about future opportunities and career options.

Students were scheduled to visit the Career Fair during all class periods from 8:30am-3:00pm, so that all of the 1,500 members of the student body had an opportunity to participate.

There were 22 student volunteers who had signed up and were excited to help with the Fair. Chelsea, a sophomore volunteer in the Mojave XP Academy, when asked about the Career Fair, said “It’s been successful. Everyone seems to be enjoying it and getting a lot out of it.” Another Mojave XP sophomore, Lydia, agreed and said, ”Barstow High has never had a Career Fair before where we can check out other kinds of jobs.”

District Superintendent, Susan Levine had this to say, “Mojave XP Academy has opened doors in career training opportunities for students that have not been opened before. This is exciting for Barstow!” Teresa Healy, Assistant Superintendent, also commented, “This is a good opportunity for students to find out about careers they haven’t heard of or seen before.” barstowcf2.jpg

Southern California Edison, not only had a booth with representatives to speak to students, but they also brought a Lineman’s Truck to demonstrate actual job operations and introduce the Lineman’s College. Lawrence Fitz, SCE Manager of Job Skills Partnership, was “glad to meet students and tell them about internship and career opportunities.”

Mojave XP Lead Teacher, Gary Johnson said, “Students have really owned this event, and have been excited about being involved.”

The ROP Television class provided a “live feed” of the event, and recorded comments and reactions from students, faculty and participants. They said that the consensus of student opinion was, “They should do this more often!”
